Tick-Borne Diseases Endemic in the United States

At least nine different diseases can be acquired from ticks in the United States:

        1. Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi)
        2. Ehrlichiosis (Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME); Ehrlichia sp.)
        3. Ehrlichiosis (Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE); Ehrlichia sp.)
        4. Babesiosis (Babesia microti; parasite)
        5. Tick Paralysis (neurotoxin from tick)
        6. Tick-borne Relapsing Fever (Borrelia recurrentis)
        7. Tularemia (Francisella tularensis)
        8. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia rickettsii)
        9. Colorado Tick Fever (CTF virus, Eyach virus, or strain S6-14-03).
        10. A study in the Sept 2001 issue of Archives of Neurology suggests Cat Scratch Fever might be transmitted to humans via tick (Bartonella henselae). Another article that has found the bacterium in ticks.
