Research
Interests: Dr.
Sargentini's long-term research goal is to understand the
molecular basis of DNA repair and mutagenesis in the bacterium Escherichia
coli as a model for understanding the basis of cancer in humans.
Presently, he is involved in characterizing the structure and function
of RadA protein. Dr. Sargentini participated in the discovery of the
radA gene and now is trying to determine its role in DNA repair.
His other main research
focus has been gamma radiation mutagenesis and
how radiation chemistry, DNA damage, DNA repair processes, and translesion
DNA replication interact to produce the mutations that are observed.
Mutation analysis has involved the DNA sequencing of lacI forward
mutations and long deletions within a lacI-Z fusion target.
