Research Interests:
Dr. Martin is interested
in the control of the cardiovascular system
(blood
pressure, heart rate, etc.) by specific areas of the brain thought to
be involved in blood pressure regulation. Dr. Martin's present research
is focused on the posterior region of the hypothalamus, and the possible
role that acetylcholine and peptides related to neuropeptide Y may play
in the regulation of the cardiovascular system. When applied to the
posterior hypothalamic nucleus these putative neurotransmitters evoke
blood pressure and heart rate changes in conscious rats. The purpose
of this research is to elucidate the mechanisms involved in these responses
and to determine if there are changes in responsiveness to these neurotransmitters
in hypertension.
